Why are we having a Chapter meeting?
- Over the last few years we have been working very hard to make sure we have good communication between individuals, fraternities, and the province as a whole. We have an annual AGM, and we always find that there is not enough time for people to have the discussion they want.
- Synodality: during 2024 we had a number of on-line open meetings, so that the Lay Dominicans could contribute to our Bishops’ Conferences on the Synod on Synodality. They were very well received, with thoughtful contributions from those attending and by email from those who could not attend.
- We have some big issues to discuss, and we want to make sure that as many people as possible can contribute.
What is a Chapter?
This is the first time we have had a Chapter meeting for the Lay Dominicans. Our brothers and sisters, the friars and congregations of sisters, have Chapters as part of the Dominican way of decision making. We know our Chapter is not the same as theirs: whatever comes out of the Chapter is not legislative in the same way that it is for the friars and the sisters. The Lay Dominican Rule does not have this provision. But it is an excellent opportunity for the province as a whole to consider some important issues.
An important factor is that a lot of work is done before the chapter meeting, so that there is wide consultation and the time to discuss and consider issues before the chapter itself. This seems to lend itself very well to a synodal-type discussion, on Zoom for the whole province, and in fraternities and groups, but needs to be supplemented with the opportunity for individuals to offer their contributions if they are unable to be part of those discussions.
We are planning that the Chapter will meet in June / July 2026, and there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved before then.
What subjects will the Chapter cover?
